A note from the tech: an EPIRB is only useful if it's registered to the boat that's sinking. When you buy one, register it the same day — NOAA for US-flagged boats, your flag state otherwise — and check the battery date on any used one before you rely on it. Inflatable PFDs need the cartridge and bobbin checked every season; both are cheap and both are in this category.
